Artist StatementThe bulk of my current work is divided between plein air landscape painting and large figurative works with themes drawn from mythology and dreams. The plein air paintings allow me to indulge my love of color and forms found in the natural world. The figurative works allow me to devote time to the study of the human body and allow me to investigate the interior world of the human mind. Mythology, dreams, and the accompanying symbols offer complex, overlapping, and often subtle patterns of meaning. Through painting, I have found that art is more than personal expression or copying the world around us - it is an act of discovery - and I am always eager to learn something new. Oil paints are my medium of choice, but I have worked in a number of others over the years including watercolors, pen and inks, acrylics, block printing, silk screen printing, clay sculpture, wood carving, and tempera. I have also painted murals, designed tee shirts, and illustrated books and greeting cards. |
